What diversion airports were used? I think I only heard JFK and PHL. I heard BDL as a theoretical option. Surprisingly I did not hear ISP, EWR, SWF, TEB, or ALB. Maybe it had to do with the companies involved and where they have stations.

Funny how ATC can make as many mistakes as they like but if a pilot made a mistake half that bad, they'd be scolding him and giving them a number to call to be scolded and have their job and livelihood threatened.

I used to fly right thru their airspace at 200' agl 4 times a week on fiber optic cable patrol right down I-4. Very professional controllers at all times. Got passed by a 182 once at my altitude scud running, missed me by about 150' about a mile off final approach. I could see the 2 people inside, that close. He wasn't talking to anybody.... I cheated death once again. They had him on radar but no data on altitude in those days. Crazy people out there flying back then, and a lot of people that didn't speak or understand english very well (Embry Riddle Students). Cleared for left turn... nope west. I guess left is a west departure where he's from...

It took me a minute to realize there was no controller in the conversation. I'm curious, when it seemed to be a busy time of day, why would an airport with three runways not have a controller. Is this normal? The radar info is there, right? but no one is monitoring it?

The only possible way I can see this unfolding is if Plane 1 and Plane 2 were doing close maneuver/filming activities.... Because if that were not the case, 4 people (1 tower, 3 in planes) gave not a single Fk about the peril they were clearly in.
