You won't believe how light this bug out bag is! Former Army Ranger and Green Beret gives you a look inside his personal go bag. The original video is rapidly approaching 3 million views in two years, so it was time to show what updates I have made since. This is essential bug out bag gear for 2020! We think you will enjoy this video of the updated Green Beret's Ultralight Bug Out Bag with gear recommendations!
In addition to seeing the packing list described in this video, you will see exactly what brands and items he chooses for his own emergency preparedness.
This is an EXTREMELY high-quality kit, which should be expected for the one bag that is meant to possibly last the rest of your life. See gear recommendations from outstanding companies from someone who has actually used them in the field: Mystery Ranch Backpacks, Helikon-Tex, SnugPak, TITAN Survival, MSR, ExoTac, Self Reliance Outfitters and Pathfinder, North American Rescue Products, Grayl, Sawyer, Katadyn, Rite in the Rain, Suunto, Wazoo Survival Gear, Princeton Tec, Morakniv, Leatherman, and more.
Read the corresponding blog here: graybeardedgreenberet.com/green-berets-ultralight-bug-out-bag-2-0/
The decision to Bug Out is not one that comes lightly, and of course your primary plan should be to Bug In first. Stay bugged in until it is no longer safe for you and your family to do so. Bug Out Bag contents vary depending on who you are getting your information from. If you have ever wondered what's inside a Green Beret Bug Out Bag, this is your chance. Nothing but what should be considered bug out bag essentials (or go bag essentials if you prefer to call it that) for survival, with none of the fluff that makes it too heavy to carry far.
When I say this go bag is Ultralight, I mean that by definition, and not in the context of the ultralight backpacking industry. It is extremely lightweight in comparison to other Bug Out Bags. Is this the best bug out bag for you and your family? That is for you to decide.

In case you can't find tactical survival training in your area, for the trauma and emergency care, you can take an EMR (Emergency Medical Responder), or ECA course. It's basically the Certification course under EMT-B. You'll learn everything from basic trauma care, splinting, shock prevention, medical terminology, etc. You might not want to work in the medical field with the certification you obtain, but you'll become familiar with emergency care. You could always just purchase a used textbook, in case you don't want to take a whole course.

It's good to see someone finally saying that a simple Bic lighter is the most practical and easiest way to get a fire going. Also saying that a multi tool is typically never needed in the woods. I can see it being in a bugout bag but not necessary in a day pack or backpack for just a hike in the woods.

😀 my "bug out bag" is a "saddle bag" that ties to the back of my mule saddle. I also carry my 4 seasons shelter (small yurt) on my other mule. Bugging out is very quickly accomplished. 2 hours after "leaving home" I will have literally vanished into the Adirondacks with enough food and survival gear to never come back. Feeding mules needs hay. Nothing else. Feeding me takes animal fat and red meat. 100 lbs. of pemmican will last me 100 days of excellent nourishment. I carry an assortment of survival weapons. Some silent, some not. I carry real hemp rope. Lots if it. It has plenty of strength and cared for it will last for years. I can thrive in the wilderness alone as long as a tree doesn't fall on me. In the Northeastern mountains finding pristine Spring water is simple. A versatile filter system is good to have but if you are wise to the Appalachain Mountain System finding clean safe drinking water is a piece of cake. Pre-made Food is Pemmican NOT store bought "Candy Bars." A compass is a great survival tool but you should already know where you are going. If you don't have a plan on where your "safe areas" are located and how to get there (more than one route) then you Will Die. Be Prepared or you are not ready to survive.

Another thing about lithium is they rarely ever leak, unlike alkaline. Also a foldable portable solar charger. You can still use your phone maps with gps if you don’t have cell signal. Also can predownload maps to your phone so the absence of a cell signal won’t matter as long as you can get gps satellite signal which is pretty much anywhere in the world. Keep phone off or in airplane mode to preserve battery, and open your map app up with gps when you need it. A lot of people don’t know about this.

Besides a pack, you ought to have at least one dry bag. Something needs to be said for comfort (lumbar support, frames, padded straps...) Clipper lighter is refillable and has a removeable flint assembly that can double as a sparker. 'Fresnel' lens. Those tiny ones are virtually useless. Get at least a 4x6 Fresnel lens 8x10 is better. Cotton balls/wads and petroleum jelly(Vaseline) make a superior fire starter. Dryer lint and parafin was also make a superior fire starter. Fatwood is an option. Don't forget calcium carbide produces acetylene gas when it gets wet. Absolutely invaluable. The beeswax tealight might burn better, but the parafin tealights are multi-purpose. A good alternative to the military poncho and liner is modern insulater emergency blankets. Of course any old tarp and a wool blanket will suffice, usually. Cotton sleeping bag liners are dirt cheap. There's a firestarter paracord now that is multi-purpose. #9 bank line can be pretty handy as well. I prefer the 'giant nail' tent stakes. Be aware they make smaller ones that don't go through rock like the old ones. That's a bad azz nalgene bottle. The Sawyer mini is still a top notch choice as well. There are lots of stainless / titanium options for compact cooking systems these days. I do like the Pathfinder system though. :) Shemaugh only works as char cloth if it's pure cotton. Some of those emergency lifeboat rations are getting crazy pricey. shop around. Double check how many calories you're getting. Magnifying glass on the Suunto is way too small to start a fire or make char cloth. Good for finding splinters, etc. The Harbin Geological is a much more rugged, multi-purpose option. A mirror is a very important thing to have. I throw a Sharpie in my map kit as well. Probably more likely to be needed for medical purposes, but it just makes more sense to store it with the pencils. If you want a specific Rite-in-the-Rain product, buy it. If you want a cheaper option, look for 'stone paper'. If you look around you can get emergency / trauma training for back woods, which due to the need to hike out is different from training where evac is an option. You're outlining a trauma kit, not an IFAK. You might have made that more clear, an IFAK is also important. Any infection could kill you. Meh, K-bab is damn near indestructible. I would lean more towards a batoning blade for the general public. Moras and etc. could be a secondary, for skinning, etc. but most people ought to have a heavy batoning knife as their primary. I'll never trade out my Gerber MP series (or Diesel). Leatherman does make a quality tool, though. I would have thrown either a Silky / Fiskar Banana saw or a hatchet / tomahawk in there. ..or both. Like you said, 'the right tool for the right job'. Energizer makes a cheaper reliable headlamp. Personally, I am stuck on my 18650 headlamp. Note that the new Nitecore Tip clips to your hat bill Good video! Should help lots of people. :)

Great video👍. However the grayell filter bottle is really only useful in warmer climates- as, (once used once) if the micro filter layers should freeze with moisture in them, they'll break & the filter will fail! As will all filters. But the small Sawyer's filters are small enough to put in a ziploc bag & keep warm (next to your body) in sub-freezing weather (in Northern USA🇺🇸 & Canada🇨🇦) . Just a thought 👍

No coincidence that my bug out also has 90% the same stuff. Evidence of a true military/ ex- military man. The IFAK is straight out of whats taught on TCCC. My sleep kit is much the same too, except I used what’s called Hootchie cords here in Australia. Double them up and tie a knot every 2-3 inches, and u have ur self an self-tensioning/ adjustable shelter tie-down cord. Can be used as a clothes line for drying clothes without the need for clothes pegs.

"this is definitely not for sleeping in the winter, in the Adirondacks" yes sir, I can fully confirm that. I tried sleeping in a 3 season tent with an old czech military surplus sleeping bag, wool blanket and fully geared up in my thermals. It wasn't so much the cold that gets you, its the wind and the unescapable wetness that surrounds you. I guess that comes with the territory of backpacking in early December, in the Adirondacks. My buddy suffered pretty bad that night in his Ozark Trail tent, guess he wont be buying that cheap gear again.

Awesome video!! for me, personally, the brands are the most important thing, using gear to survive or camp / bushcraft. since i need these items to be reliable, function well, and not break easily. many brands these days are just a huge red flag. absolutely under no circumstance would you want to actually use them let alone put your life in their hands.

I don’t necessarily disagree with that on a personal level. I have brands that I use and trust (and those are represented in my videos and in my online store). The spirit of that comment is for people that use and trust a different brand that I don’t use or recommend. Doesn’t mean the brand I use and recommend is the only adequate brand is what I’m saying. There are others out there

@The Gray Bearded Green Beret You forgot grease pencil and map cover. The grease pencil can be used to not only plot on a clear map case but to leave info on an abandoned vehicles windshield in case of breakdown. And yes, I use one to show POI waypoints/UTM data on my trucks windshield to this day.

quick tip for map to make it relatively waterproof: use wide scotch tape to laminate your map from both sides.

@The Gray Bearded Green Beret there are few stores that don’t have such waterproof notebooks/maps in stock or they cost insane money. Waterproof maps - most of our stores never heard of ones. Wide tape is available everywhere. What i really need is good firestarter rod, big rods with good spark are not available. I learn and prepare some extra items that can take fire from small sparks. Only practice shows what works in certain conditions

@The Gray Bearded Green Beret in my area there are no such maps. In third world countries you need to be creative, you need to adapt, to think how to get max out of things you have in every store

Probably the best channel yet for stripping away the noise, and good guidance for packing only what you need, and stressing knowledge and experience over gadgets. I would humbly add one point when talking about the multi-tool, In my opinion the pliers have one other use ... they eliminate the need to carry silcock key. I’ve tried both on spigots in parks, on commercial buildings, and government buildings and I’ve not yet found one I could not open just as easily with pliers as I could with the key. Great video! Keep ‘em coming!

Not a chance. The ferro rod is 4% magnesium already. The mag bar is one of the most garbage pieces of kit the military issues. The ferro rod on the bar is small and doesn’t last long and then you are left with a ridiculous amount of magnesium. I do this professionally and have never once needed a mag bar.

Your whole kit is very close to a ultralight hiker kit. Which I think is smart. Some of your kit could have been smaller. Greyl water purifier could have saved some room. But I understand what you meant with a second use for storing water. I prefer keeping a needle and neosporin around for blisters. I think we all have had more minor wounds than major injuries. In the end just take what I say with a grain of salt.

Every time I see someone say - poncho for use as tent and as poncho at the same time. If it rains - u get wet and cold the second u want to put up ur poncho “tent”. Specially if it’s rain hard. Wouldn’t be a small tarp or 2nd poncho more effective if u really want to stay dry.

Where is your hygiene kit Ranger? Small cuts kill as well as big ones if you don't clean them. Pink eye will be hell with out a CVS around the corner. Everyone wants high speed gear. You won't get far if you get sick.

You aren’t getting sick from a small cut. They do not kill. That’s ridiculous. I work with my hands all day long. Small cuts, scratches from briars, splinters often. Extended time in the field with that. They don’t get infected and I’m still going.

Again, huge fan of this video and I’m back for my 10th view and I have two suggestions... Stretch wrap and tuck style TQ. It has many suitable applications like kids and animals, but also whatever tasks you can imagine a rubber band can handle. ( I know it’s not TCCC recommend) Second, Lock picking equipment. Not suggestion stealing or trespassing, but if you are bugging out rules probably aren’t the biggest concern anymore. Thanks again GB2 slowly buying up these exact items! What are your thoughts on my suggestions?

20:19 "Improvising is something you do when you're *not* prepared" ... great quote. I know a couple of guys that wear their ability to improvise like it's a badge of honor. Don't get me wrong, it's good to be able to do that, but what this guy's saying needs to be heard. Get yourself prepared - period. I had a platoon sergeant once that got really bent out of shape as I ditty bopped to formation 30 seconds before we fell in. I thought I was fine, but he made it super clear that "if you're not 10 minutes early, you're f***ing late!" That was a rough morning for me. Anyway, that became sage advice for me later in life.
